Day 1,396: Trump baselessly tweets dozens of times about election fraud, but not once about COVID-19
Even though he knows he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, Donald Trump wants to give himself every excuse possible for the defeat.
Democracy be damned, Trump wants to convince tens of millions of his supporters that the election was stolen from him in many different states despite no evidence of such a scheme. (Trump, unsurprisingly, is only alleging any misdeeds in states that he lost and has bragged in recent days about his ensuring a secure election security.) Lawsuits are being dismissed and conspiracy theories are being debunked. All that’s left is fruitless rage.
Trump took to Twitter dozens of times Sunday to baselessly claim fraud and an unfair election. Shouting into the void — Dominon! Poll watchers! Rigged! Court cases! — and amplifying far-right sycophants, Trump’s goal is simply to sow discord so he can save face. Supporters in the streets starting skirmishes or worse is icing on the cake for him.
Despite mashing the tweet button over and over, Trump couldn’t find time for a single one about COVID-19, which has killed nearly 250,000 Americans and is infecting nearly 200,000 Americans a day.
Trump hasn’t bothered to meet with his coronavirus task force for “several months” according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Proving his lack of seriousness about either topic, Trump wasn’t holed up with legal advisors to discuss an election strategy or scientists to pore over COVID-19 options. Sunday, like Saturday, Trump visited one of his golf courses.
It was his 302nd such trip during his presidency.
As gruesome stories of death and illness envelope the nation, Trump is spending time relaxing at his own properties. He has now spent over 13 months of time at one of properties of any type since his inauguration.
The spread of COVID-19 will only get worse over the holidays. The lack of any federal leadership or plan is certain to lead to tens of thousands of additional deaths in the U.S. And if Trump was half as worried about the blood on his hands as he is about grass stains on his slacks, perhaps the coronavirus would be largely under control by now.
