Day 1,395: Daily COVID-19 cases near 200,000 as Trump hits golf course for 301st time

Reportedly, when vetting some potential running mates in 2016, Donald Trump offered to let them do all of the work as long as he got the credit. In line with that, since his inauguration, he’s never had much of an interest in doing work. He’s preferred pomp over policy and tweeting over diplomacy.

Since losing the 2020 election, Trump has done away with even the pretense of working.

As COVID-19 infections raise to unprecedented levels nearly a year after the first case in the U.S., Trump still has no plan. Currently more Americans are dying every three days than died on 9/11.

The U.S. added more than 184,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, the fourth day in a row that the country has set a record for daily infections, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

It has been about four weeks since the U.S. overtook India to see the most daily cases of any country in the world. While India’s case numbers spiked in September, they have largely been on a downward path since then. But cases in the U.S. continue to surge. For the first time, the country’s seven-day moving average of new cases has surpassed 150,000.

America is also the world leader in coronavirus fatalities, with over 244,000 COVID-19 related deaths. More than 1,400 people died from the virus in the U.S. on Friday — the most deaths that day of any country.

It’s not as if Trump is doing nothing, however. He’s playing golf.

A far cry from seeing his job to the end, Trump is predictably trying to run out the clock. As American families are struggling and grief-stricken, a smiling Trump is lining up his next golf shot. The monumental task of stemming the coronavirus tide will largely fall to Joe Biden, even as the spread is becoming uncontainable in many areas.

With an ode to Nero, the epitaph on the Trump’s presidency should be, “Trump golfed while coronavirus raged.”

1,395 days in, 67 to go
