Day 1,391: Trump, GOP continue attempt to gaslight nation about presidential election
He lost. It’s over. The rest is an antidemocratic Republican sideshow.
Election Day was a week ago, and the race was largely settled days ago: Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden. Five states flipped from red to blue and none flipped the other way, carrying Biden comfortably above the 270-electoral vote threshold.
Yet Donald Trump and the GOP predictably continue to try and sow doubt in the results and allege fraud when there is proof of neither.
Tuesday, Trump continued to falsely tweet about how he will ultimately be declared the winner and continued to spout baseless claims about illegal voters and a rigged election.
Far from running from the antidemocratic stance that Trump continues to shout, the GOP is self-immolating itself for him. The party is filing frivolous lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit and getting repeatedly laughed out of courts across the country.
For the fleeting moments they’re in court — and off Twitter and where cameras aren’t capturing every movement — they’re admitting that there’s no actual known fraud.
Most of their lawsuits wouldn’t do anything even if successful.
Nonsensically, GOP cronies are pointing to increased turnout in large counties as the reason for a suspicion — instead of evidence of a highly motivated electorate — about a Biden victory. And yet, their own touted data shows a nearly identical Democratic-Republican split compared to the 2016 election. For instance, in Wayne County, Michigan the vote split in 2016 was D+37 and in 2020 it was D+38. Notably, Trump got more support in the county than he did four years ago on a raw number and percentage basis: his share of the vote went from 29% to 30% in the county.
High-level Republicans are also gaslighting the country by pretending the race isn’t over and that Trump will be in office for another term.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo bragged about a “smooth transition” to Trump’s second term when asked about national security implications associated with getting the Biden team up to speed as quickly as possible.
Trump’s veep and biggest lapdog, Mike Pence, even in private, is toeing the company line that Trump will win.
All the while, Trump is clearing house at the Pentagon, ensuring loyalists are by his side over the last ten weeks of his term as he throws every desperate Hail Mary. The goal is obvious: when Trump’s term is over on January 20, 2021, he and the GOP want to ensure that there is a shadow over the legitimacy of Biden’s victory — even if just among their most fervent and delusional supporters — democracy and the nation be damned.
