Day 1,366: Trump threatens to leave the country if he loses the election

Over the past few months, amid lagging poll numbers, Donald Trump has upped his attempts at insulting Joe Biden, rewriting history, begging for votes, staging ridiculous photo-ops and doing everything possible to claw his way to reelection without getting to actual substance or policy.

As The New York Times noted, Trump is spending most of his time at his rallies these days airing “personal grievances,” such as imagined slights and alleging kooky conspiracy theories against him.

Slipped into a Friday rally in Macon, Georgia, during one such rant, Trump threatened to leave the country should he lose to Biden in 19 days.

In many ways, Trump and his campaign have failed to adapt in any way from 2016 to 2020. Trump is no longer a political outsider. He can no longer blame an incumbent for missteps. He’s somehow still trying to run on the same things he’s failed on for four years ago: Mexico will pay for a border wall, the economy will get better, manufacturing will surge, farmers will thrive, the U.S. will negotiate terrific deals. He’s trying to read the exact same script about the Democratic nominee being totally frail or unimaginably corrupt.

Nothing has changed with how he campaigns or what his message is, yet much of the country is in a far worse position than they were four years ago.

Voters are noticing.

And for Trump, every day that passes is another day that he fails to close the gap with Biden. Joking or not — and for what it’s worth, the crowd was laughing, but he wasn’t — Trump’s humiliation if he loses to Biden will be palpable and loud and defensive and accusatory. His fleeing from the ignominy of losing, as well a host of potential legal and financial issues, is likely at least a semi-serious consideration.
