Day 984: ‘Civil War,’ ‘Treason’: Trump is fomenting American discord to try and save own neck

There is no low that is too low for Donald Trump. That has been established over the past three-plus years. But the last few days have revealed, yet again, how deep that well goes.

Trump is currently trying to rile up his base in despicable and dangerous ways.

Sunday, he quoted Robert Jeffress, a far-right pastor who has previously said that Barack Obama couldn’t be “the Antichrist” because “the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers.” Jeffress has been tied to Trump since before the 2016 election, and was named to his Evangelical Advisory Board and White House Faith Initiative.

Trump and Jeffress floated the possibility of a civil war — that is, Americans killing other Americans — if Trump were to be impeached.

That someone in Trump’s position would tweet anything close to this is wildly reckless. He’s seeking to sow division among Americans purely for personal gain. By comparing a political action to one of the most heinous chapters in U.S. history does a gross disservice to the latter and those who fought for freedom.

Not content to stand by that tweet alone, Trump accused Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) on Sunday and Monday of committing treason because he wants to move forward with an impeachment inquiry.

Schiff summarized Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president as, “in essence,” a mob-style shakedown. For that, Trump believes that Schiff has betrayed his country in an attempt to overthrow the government. Impeachment is a legal and constitutional procedure of removing and replacing a president that, needless to say, misses the mark of anarchy.

In Monday’s tweet, Trump throws a question mark after “Arrest for Treason” because he doesn’t even have the fortitude to stand by his own ridiculousness.

More than anything, Trump just can’t believe there’s a real impeachment inquiry relating to his actions. For that, he’s willing to set fire to the country to ensure he doesn’t freeze.
