Day 98: Trump’s North Korea meeting with Senate was a sham

In an effort to improve optics, Trump wasted the entire Senate’s time.

Yesterday, Donald Trump summoned every senator to the White House for a meeting about North Korea. These type of meetings are extraordinarily odd, so many were buzzing over the need for such a gathering.

What did the Senators learn? That they were pawns in a game of optics.

The senators appeared to glean no new information as the administration briefed them in broad generalities that the senators already knew.

Even Republicans couldn’t put a positive spin on the meeting.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) was also nonplussed.

If Republicans found the meeting to be contrived, you know Democrats felt the same way.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) called it a “dog and pony show” where the people briefing the Senate returned to the Capitol anyway to brief the House of Representatives.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) called the purpose “complete optics.”

Others, like Sen. Jeff Blumenthal (D-CT), felt the same way.
