Day 976: Collusion: Trump freely admits to pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden

As if norms couldn’t be more eroded, Donald Trump isn’t even hiding his contempt for American democracy.

A whistleblower from the U.S. intelligence community filed a complaint regarding a “promise” made by Trump to a foreign leader. Further reporting indicated that the complaint stemmed from a series of events with Ukraine, including a phone call where Trump urged their president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to investigate Joe Biden and his family eight times.

Now, after initial mealy-mouthed cries of “fake news,” Trump isn’t even bothering to hide his actions.

Trump said his conversation with Zelensky was “largely the fact that we don’t want our people, like Vice President Biden and his son, creating to the corruption already in the Ukraine.”

The last three years have given Trump the impression that he is free to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, without any repercussions. Republicans have continued to maintain a wall of despicable silence no matter what he does. Democrats have been only marginally better, with some clamoring for impeachment and others still trying to find the appetite to hold Trump accountable due to concerns about the 2020 election (both their own and Trump’s).

But if the House won’t impeach Trump for this, then what would they ever impeach any president for? Trump is brazenly admitting to pushing a foreign power to investigate one of his political opponents. It’s an abuse of power, it’s collusion, it’s corrupt and it’s wholly undemocratic.
