Day 952: There’s a very different way Trump spoke to Puerto Ricans and Floridians in path of Hurricane Dorian
The approaches that Donald Trump has taken to incoming Hurricane Dorian are quite different when it comes to Puerto Rico and Florida.
For Puerto Rico, Trump seemed to lament that hurricanes and/or the island existed. He insulted the people and elected officials on the ground, propped himself up based on nothing, ignored his shameful response to Hurricane Maria — including playing golf while the destruction was on-going— that added to the devastation and death toll two years ago, and remained focused on the cost of the storm. His mind wasn’t on the people, but on FEMA and his own administration.
When the storm largely avoided the island, Trump turned his focus to Florida with a very different message. His comments related to the storm and need for preparation. He retweeted a National Weather Service notice underscoring the danger involved from a trusted scientific source.
American citizens make up the vast majority of both Puerto Rico and Florida populations. Yet the way each were spoken to was quite different.
Trump has routinely disparaged Hispanics both before he was elected and after. While not as overt as some of his past language, by comparing the last few days’ rhetoric about a deadly hurricane, it’s readily apparent, yet again, how Trump treats certain Americans differently.
