Day 945: Americans don’t really like the way Trump is handling much of anything
No one likes to tout their own (cherry-picked) approval ratings more than Donald Trump. He’s obsessed with reviewing the figures on a near-daily basis, according to reports over the past two-plus years.
While he likes to pretend his approval rating is at or above 50%…
…the truth is it’s not even close to that. His true approval rating hovers around 41%.
Notably, at no point in Trump’s first 945 days in office has his approval rating bettered Barack Obama’s for the same day. Save for a few random days of passing Bill Clinton, Trump has never been more popular than any president since Ronald Reagan. (And even then, Trump’s numbers barely eke by Reagan.)
A recent AP-NORC poll has Trump’s approval rating even lower than his 41% aggregate rating.
Just 36% of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president; 62% disapprove.
In addition to the AP noting that Trump is the only president to never hit 50% in one of their polls, the way he handles a number of specific policy issues is deeply unpopular.
Trump’s poor grades in the AP-NORC poll extend to his handling of several key issues: immigration, health care, foreign policy and guns. Views of the Republican president’s handling of the economy remain a relative bright spot despite fears of a potential recession, but at least 60% of Americans disapprove of his performance on other issues.
That “relative bright spot” on the economy? More American still disapprove of Trump’s handling of it, even after he inherited a roaring economy from Obama.
Significantly more Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, although even on that issue he remains slightly underwater: 46% approve and 51% disapprove of his performance.
Trump’s presidency can be summed up well by that last paragraph: having a net approval rating of -5% is considered a “relative bright spot” on an issue.
