Day 941: Trump’s 10-day vacation by the numbers (spoiler: expensive, with a lot of golf and Twitter)

Donald Trump concluded his 10-day vacation at his New Jersey club on Sunday. While he proclaimed that he would frequently work while away from the White House, the numbers say otherwise.

  • After spending more time at his golf club Saturday and Sunday, Trump has now spent 34 of the past 80 days since June 1st at one of his golf properties.
  • While Trump bragged that he is forfeiting his $400,000 salary while in office, August’s trip alone will cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Trump has now topped $110 million in vacation expenses. And he has apparently forgotten his previous criticisms of Barack Obama’s golf outings now that he has spent more in two-and-a-half years than Obama spent in eight.
  • Trump’s public calendar, which includes some but not all events, typically includes a few meetings and intelligence briefings. It included zero of each for the entirety of the vacation.
  • One of Trump’s rare outings was to a petrochemical plant that required workers to choose between attending a Trump speech or forfeiting pay for the day.
  • Trump wiggled his fingers to send 213 tweets and retweets, or an average of nearly one per hour for the entirety of the vacation.

Golf, Twitter and no work. Sounds like his vacation was exactly what even his aides feared it would be.
