Day 940: Trump keeps defending white nationalists
Donald Trump was on a retweet frenzy Saturday, seemingly mashing the button anytime anyone praised him. Maybe he was feeling insecure, but maybe he was trying to bury a tweet from earlier in the day that grabbed a lot of eyeballs.
The tweet came as a group known as the Proud Boys were rallying in Portland. The Proud Boys are a hate group who are actively looking for fights.
The Proud Boys reportedly have a four-step initiation process. It starts with a prospect declaring himself a “Proud Boy,” suiting up in Fred Perry polo shirts with yellow stripes — similar to those worn by skinheads.
The second degree is a “cereal beat-in” during which the new member is punched and beaten by current members until the plebe can rattle off the names of five cereals (you know, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Cheerios!)
The third degree reported involves “adhering to the masturbation regimen and getting a tattoo,” blogger Will Sommer wrote in a recent post.
Since then, a fourth-degree has been added to the initiation ritual — brawling with antifascists at public rallies.
They gleefully throw up white power signs wherever they go, seeking to intimidate and denigrate.
And they plan on making Portland a hub of sorts.
Despite all that, there’s Trump criticizing the other group. While the left-wing anti-fascist group antifa has its own controversies, Trump is actively ignoring that white supremacist violence instigators are actively trying to make a war zone out of Portland. Yet he’s not speaking about the danger to police officers by the Proud Boys trying to start a melee. He’s not not speaking about the rise of white nationalism and the serious ramifications stemming from that.
Instead, he’s giving the Proud Boys and other white nationalists a pass. He has repeatedly done so, including when he said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the 2017 Charlottesville white supremacist rally.
He does it because they vote for him, and he needs that support, of course.
The MAGA hats were on full display among the Proud Boys on Saturday.
An American president has sold his soul to white supremacists (among many other heinous groups and countries) so that he can have a better shot at winning reelection. As a racist, Trump also may just flat out agree with them.
