Day 919: Trump’s racism unsurprisingly rears its ugly head again

There has been nary a whisper of rebuke from Republicans.

If the topic of Donald Trump’s rampant racism seems to come up often, it’s because racist people frequently say and do racist things. Whether it’s about potential tenants in his buildings, immigrants, or members of Congress, Trump speaks about people of color with a disdain than he does not use for white people, even white nationalists.

That racism came out again Saturday morning with a scathing attack about Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and the district that he represents. Trump, presumably after watching Fox News talk about Cummings Saturday morning, is upset that the congressman chairs the House Oversight Committee and has also spoken out forcefully about the heinous conditions of the prison camps holding migrants near the border.

Trump described Baltimore, one of America’s blackest cities, as a “disgusting rat and rodent infested mess,” “dangerous,” “‘filthy,” “corrupt” and somewhere “no human being would want to live.” And with that, apparently without another thought, Trump headed to his golf club for yet another round, having insulted a congressman and an entire group of Americans living in a city that he has likely never stepped foot in.

Trump’s use of “infested” has drawn particular attention since he only seems to use the word when discussing certain groups of people.

Last week Trump and the GOP decided that anyone who insults any aspect of the U.S. is un-American, notwithstanding criticism being an inherently American right. Yet despite Cummings being a well-respected colleague, and Baltimore being an American city, there have been few words offered in defense of either by any Republican in Congress, as they continue to enable Trump.
