Day 907: Coward Republicans continue to enable Trump
The 116th United States Congress is made up of 53 Republicans in the Senate and 197 Republicans in the House.
Their complete and utter cowardice has never been on more of a display than it is right now.
As Donald Trump’s racist comments about Democratic congresswomen were echoing and were doubled down on by Trump, they have remained shamefully silent.
Save for two — Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) and Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) — who denounced Trump’s racist rhetoric for what it was, the rest of the caucus has either offered a mealy-mouthed slap on the wrist, completely ignored the comments, or offered total support of Trump. The GOP has also buried their head in the sand about the heinous conditions men, women and children are being kept in at border prison camps as a result of Trump’s policies. The pattern of looking the other way extends from Mike Pence all the way to freshmen in Congress.
The truth is that anything less than a total condemnation of Trump’s words and actions is wholly insufficient for those that take an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Republican after Republican — literally hundreds of them — blindly support a president who demeans the very fabric of American society and democracy. This has been going on for years. Those that offer an iota of resistance to Trump are met with White House vitriol and online threats.
Only after they’re gone — such as Paul Ryan and his current embarrassing attempt to sell books and rehab his image — do they feel emboldened enough to speak out.
For Republicans in office, unconditional fealty to Trump is expected and unconditional fealty to Trump is being given by virtually every single one of them. Upholding an oath to the United States is being eschewed in favor of trying to secure another two, four or six years in office.
