Day 9: Curious Pattern to Where Trump Suspends Issuing of Visas

Yesterday, in a truly despicable act, Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the issuing of visas for anyone — including desperate refugees — from the following countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Notable countries that aren’t subject to the suspension include Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

What could be Trump’s motivation to stop immigrants and refugees from those countries? He claims it has nothing to do with religion, but has everything to do with terror.

“It’s not the Muslim ban. But it’s countries that have tremendous terror,” Donald Trump told David Muir. “It’s countries that we’re going to be spelling out in a little while in the same speech. And it’s countries that people are going to come in and cause us tremendous problems. Our country has enough problems without allowing people to come in who, in many cases or in some cases, are looking to do tremendous destruction.”

Trump added, “You’re looking at people that come in, in many cases, in some cases with evil intentions. I don’t want that. They’re ISIS. They’re coming under false pretense.”

These people aren’t ISIS. They’re refugees displaced as a result of conflicts — including American-made conflicts — in the region.

Regardless of Trump’s words, this is an attack on Islam. The executive order prioritizes persecuted Christian refugees over Muslim refugees.

Even if this were about safety, Trump chose not to suspend visas from Turkey, where the nation has seen nearly a dozen terrorist attacks in the last year alone. Or Saudi Arabia, where the government likely had a direct role in 9/11. Or Egypt, which last month had ISIS claim responsibility for a terrorist attack in Cairo and a plane intentionally downed the year before.

We’re turning down refugees — largely children, women and families — under the guise of safety, but Trump selectively chose seven nations despite other nations have the same or greater risk.

Is there a pattern to his madness?

According to a 2016 financial disclosure, Trump has business dealings in 25 nations across the world over the world.

Trump hasn’t suspended visas from a single country he has business dealings with.

Turning away the most needed people? Check.

Granting priority based on religion? Check.

Maintaining and abusing all conflicts of interest? Check.
