Day 888: No one even bats an eye at Trump’s blatantly racist tweets anymore
Longtime United States women’s national soccer team player and co-captain Megan Rapinoe told Women’s World Cup magazine in January that she wouldn’t go to the White House if invited after the World Cup. With the games now being played, the comments are garnering increased national attention.
Donald Trump responded Wednesday morning in a way only he could.
This is breathtaking in its blatant racism and pandering. Sure, he responds to Rapinoe and says she’ll be invited to the White House win or lose, but he also takes a random potshot at basketball players.
When Trump says everyone visits the White House, “[o]ther than the NBA, which now refuses to call owners, owners (please explain that I just got Criminal Justice Reform passed, Black unemployment is at the lowest level in our Country’s history, and the poverty index is also best number EVER” he’s beyond condescending.
He’s telling NBA players — the majority of whom are black — that they should like him because of minor changes with respect to criminal justice, a downtick in black unemployment and better poverty numbers. Not only is Trump pretty clearly saying that all three are inherently black issues, the implication is that these are the only issues that black Americans care about. Moreover, Trump seems to think the players don’t know about these issues or are incapable of finding out about them and wants someone to “please explain” it to them.
It’s worth noting that no NBA team has visited the White House since Trump was inaugurated, as he embarrassingly retracted at least one invitation after a team, the Golden State Warriors, announced that they wouldn’t be attending. The issue seems to have wounded his pride.
As for his most recent tweets, Trump took a statement made by a soccer player six months ago about not visiting the White House and tried turning it into a “why black people should love me” moment. Ironically, Rapinoe has noted her belief that Trump is a racist. He did nothing to disprove that belief Wednesday.
