Why full disclosure is so important.

It’s April 15th: historically the last day to file your tax return with the IRS without an extension (though since it falls on a Saturday this year, you have until Monday).

To celebrate the date, hundreds of thousands of Americans in more than 150 cities across the U.S. are marching today to demand Donald Trump publicly release his tax returns, as he long-promised he would do.

Trump’s tax returns aren’t vitally important because Americans are merely curious how much he paid in taxes. They’re crucial to know what — if any — conflicts of interest Trump has and whether he’s violating the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause by being enriched by foreign powers while serving as president. (Spoiler: he is.) Americans would also learn whether Trump does any international banking and where those banks are located. If Trump paid taxes in any other nations, that would appear on his tax returns as well. Finally, Americans would be able to figure out if and how much Trump would benefit from his own tax reform proposals.

Trump failing to release his returns has broken decades of bipartisan precedent for candidates running for the highest office in the land.

Considering the nature of his business dealings and alleged wealth, Trump’s returns are vital to know who he’s working for: himself, foreign agents, or the American people.
