Day 837: Why does Donald Trump not believe in working on Mondays?
Donald Trump’s frequent use of many hours-long “executive time” to watch TV or chat with buddies is well-documented. His frequent outings on the golf course and on vacation is also common knowledge.
Despite claiming he’s “working hard” on both Twitter and during press gaggles, there seems to be precious little actually being done by Trump. That is especially true on Mondays, where Trump seems to need the entire day to warm up to do anything else during the week.
For instance, here are Trump’s last five Mondays, including today:
- May 6: Presenting trophy to Army football team, intelligence briefing, presenting medal to Tiger Woods
- April 29: Lunch with Mike Pence, welcoming Baylor Bears women’s national basketball team
- April 22: Easter Egg Roll Breakfast, Easter Egg Roll, intelligence briefing
- April 15: Roundtable discussion on economy and tax in Minnesota (one hour
- April 8: Credentialing ceremony for new ambassadors, lunch with Pence, intelligence briefing, meeting with Mike Pompeo
Most days don’t start until near noon and they all end in the mid-afternoon, with the exception of today’s ceremony for Woods, which was at 6 pm. All of the events on the schedule are exceedingly short too.
While there are undoubtedly some phone calls or meetings that are kept off the official schedule, past presidents have stuffed their public and private calendars. There would be little reason to exclude from his calendar meetings with Cabinet members, for example. And yet, he seems to rarely meet with any of the most prominent members of his administration.
Excluding meals, Trump has hosted three groups of athletes, had three intelligence briefings, one roundtable, an Easter event, a meeting with a single Cabinet member and a credentialing ceremony. That’s 10 events in five Mondays.
But, yeah, he’s “working hard” all right.
