Day 835: Trump plays golf, retweets some alt-right crazies
While Donald Trump proclaimed for the nth time this week that he’s working hard, the evidence says otherwise. He found time to visit one of his golf courses for the whopping 186th time on Saturday. The trip marked his 249th day at a Trump-owned property. During those visits, he skirts emoluments clause issues, conflicts of interest considerations and seems to search for his administration’s next nominees.
When off the course, Trump found plenty of time to retweet alt-right and fringe political talking heads.
There are those that work with conspiracy theorists that peddle garbage, including that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax.
A 23-year old Canadian who finished dead last in a district race despite backing from alt-right websites like Breitbart. She has pushed a conspiracy theory that claimed the Quebec City shooting was carried out not by a white man by rather by a Syrian refugee.
One who pushes “vaccines cause autism” nonsense while failing to understand that the Constitution stop non-government companies from censoring or curating speech.
The head of an organization with credible allegations of racism and illegal campaign activity.
There were many more, including numerous retweets of Daily Caller articles. The Daily Caller has enough controversies that they make up the majority of its Wikipedia page, including ones entitled “Ties to white supremacists, ” “False prostitution allegations,” and “Encouragement of violence against protesters.”
Maybe Trump feels better about himself after retweeting fringe characters. Maybe he thinks it will galvanize his base. Maybe an aide thinks this is a politically shrewd move. No matter what, it shows Trump cozying up to the farthest end of those on the political spectrum: those with conspiratorial ties, racist ties, sexist ties and anti-scientific ties.
