Day 832: Barr, exposed again as partisan hack by Senate Judiciary Committee, to hide from House Judiciary Committee

Attorney General William Barr testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday. He revealed, once and for all, that he sees himself as a staunch defender of Donald Trump rather than a defender of the rule of law and the United States.

While Republicans were quick to throw Barr softballs and change the subject of his testimony to FBI overreach, the entirety of his answers — largely generated from Democratic questioning — were jarring in their partisanship.

During Sen. Kamala Harris’ (D-CA) questioning — some of the most effective of the day — Barr suddenly appeared to not understand basic words, like “suggest.” Barr was trying to avoid answering a question about whether the White House was pressuring him or the Justice Department to investigate anyone.

Despite issuing a dubious letter seeking to clear Trump less than 48 hours after receding the Mueller report, Barr never bothered reading the special counsel’s underlying evidence.

Barr seemed unfamiliar with critical aspects of the report, which is odd considering his statements about conspiracy and obstruction.

He was hypocritical, if not outright perjurious.

And he confessed a belief that presidents are above the law by claiming they can shut down any investigation they want and simply allege that they were falsely accused — like Trump’s frequent “witch hunt” claims.

Barr claimed that Trump pushing for subordinates to commit perjury is “not a crime.” In actuality, it is a crime: obstruction of justice. One would think the head of the Justice Department should know that.

After his dismal showing Wednesday, numerous Democrats called for Barr to resign. Impeachment rumblings came from others.

For Barr’s part, he’s suddenly skipping out on a scheduled appearance to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, objecting to procedural changes in the Democratic-controlled committee. In addition, he’s failing to turn over subpoenaed documents: the entire, unredacted Mueller report.
