Day 823: Trump at 41 tweets — and counting — on Monday
Messages seem to indicate he’s nervous about being impeached
With a schedule that only consisted of White House Easter Egg Roll responsibilities and an intelligence briefing, Donald Trump’s social media fingers were very itchy on Monday, presumably while he was using his copious “executive time” to watch TV.
The desperation to try and spin the disastrous Robert Mueller report was apparent, just a day after Trump’s team tried to convince everyone that he was happy. So Trump told his story in basically the only way he knows how: Twitter.
He started just before 9:00 am with a Fox News clip and just kept tweeting and retweeting (including a tweet from nearly a year ago). He got so carried away that he even retweeted one of his own tweets.
By the time he was (apparently) done 12 hours later, he sent a massive 41 tweets, with the vast majority citing or using Fox News clips about the Mueller report. While the propaganda-like Fox News messages were there to try and provide a measure of an argument about the Mueller probe, Trump’s true feelings were revealed early on.
Despite the bluster and the faux-bravado, he’s terrified of being impeached and having that stain on him forever. He lambasted Bill Clinton about being impeached while campaigning against Hillary Clinton, and Trump would take it as a tremendous embarrassment to suffer the same fate.
Not only that, Trump is wrong about what can lead to impeachment. As Trump buddy Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) noted in 1999 — while talking about Clinton — that a president can be impeached “if [Congress] determines that your conduct as a public official is clearly out of bounds in your role . . . because impeachment is not about punishment. Impeachment is about cleansing the office. Impeachment is about restoring honor and integrity to the office.”
Monday marks the third work day since the Mueller report was published, and somehow Trump has managed to have only one more meeting (3) than golf rounds (2) during that time.
