Day 808: Trump can’t decide if things at the southern border are going great or poorly

DHS Secretary suddenly resigns, Trump claims all is well

Yet another member of Donald Trump’s Cabinet was ousted Sunday, this time it was Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s turn.

Nielsen has overseen a litany of questionable decisions and human rights abuses. On her watch, DHS enacted a policy to separate children from their parents at the border and kept kids in de facto cages and prison camps that aren’t close to big enough, clean enough or safe enough. Four people — including two children — died in border patrol custody since December.

In announcing the end to Nielsen’s inglorious reign, Trump accidentally revealed that he can’t decide whether things have been going well or not on the southern border.

On one hand, he’s claiming that the DHS has been doing a great job.

Despite Sunday’s tweets, Trump has dubiously claimed a national emergency to try and secure taxpayer funding for a border wall because he is unhappy with the state of the situation. (This despite guaranteeing while running that Mexico would pay for the wall.)

Also, his DHS Secretary just suddenly resigned (or was forced out). If that’s not a sign of things going poorly, nothing is.

CNN reported Nielsen resigned because Trump is more unhinged than he normally is about issues on the border and is making “impossible requests.” That’s quite a reason from someone who oversaw as many problematic issues as she did.

On top of that, despite Trump falsely proclaiming immigration wins as frequently as possible, undocumented crossings hit a 12-year high in February.

Either things are going well (meaning a border wall isn’t actually necessary) or poorly (a politically tough position to admit for Trump) but they certainly can’t be both.
