Day 79: What did bombing Syria actually accomplish?
Yesterday, we noted that Donald Trump has failed to earn the benefit of the doubt on anything, including Syria.
As the smoke clears from his ordered shelling of a Syrian airbase, and American taxpayers find out what a $90 million bombing effort accomplished, questions about the impact of the attack are growing louder.
First, it doesn’t appear as that many aircraft were destroyed in the bombing.
Additionally, the airbase that was bombed is still completely functional, and warplanes are taking off from the location. The runways — approximately 80 feet long — were 100 percent untouched by a single bomb.
The U.S. warned the Russians before the bombings took place.
So if most of the planes weren’t destroyed and planes can continue to take off from the airbase, what was actually accomplished? What was the goal of the bombing, besides getting positive public relations?
Nothing of consequence was actually damaged by the strike and there has been zero indication that Syria’s chemical weapons supply has been eliminated.
As we speculated yesterday, the the bombing could have been done for truly noble reasons, but it also could have been carried out to help boost flagging approval ratings or help dispel the notion that Trump is in bed with Russia.
Right now, Trump is selling the bombing as a huge win, when in reality it appears to have been nothing more than a very expensive fireworks display.
