Day 781: Trump’s dumbest lie yet
Saying “Tim Apple” instead of “Tim Cook” was intentional, he swears.
There are lies.
Then there are Donald Trump lies.
Monday’s whopper might have been the dumbest one yet.
Last week, Trump made a small, humorous gaffe during a White House meeting of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board, where Apple CEO Tim Cook is a member.
Trump accidentally called him “Tim Apple.”
It was a simple mistake that made the rounds on late night talk shows and social media, but innocuous enough and surely soon to be forgotten. That is, until an embarrassed Trump decided to offer two — TWO! — ridiculous explanations for the flub.
First — despite the video evidence — Trump told donors that he actually said “Tim Cook, Apple” at the meeting.
Then, Monday, Trump doubled down on lying about the error, claiming he wanted “to save time & words.”
How long does it take to say “Cook” out loud? A quarter of a second? Less?
Perhaps Trump’s dumbest lie of all time (and there are plenty of contenders) is claiming that saying “Tim Apple” was intentional and strategic to save time and words.
In Trump’s mind, he’s incapable of ever making a mistake or showing humility. Those are signs of weakness to him. So he first invented a lie that was easily debunked by watching a short video clip. Then he created a second lie — that undercut the first lie — that’s somehow more ridiculous than the one disproved by video.
