Day 759: Report: White House requested Japan nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Friday, during remarks made in the Rose Garden, Donald Trump bragged to reporters about the glowing letter Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wrote on his behalf, nominating him for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The remarks — which also included Trump’s declaration of a national emergency on the southern border — were rife with false claims. One of those lies was Trump claiming Barack Obama warned him that a war was imminent between the U.S. and North Korea. (It was false on two counts: 1) that Obama told Trump that and 2) that the substance was true.)
It turns out Trump’s spewing about the Nobel Prize wasn’t exactly forthcoming either: the reason Abe nominated Trump is because the White House asked them to.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after receiving a request from the U.S. government to do so, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday.
The report follows Trump’s claim on Friday that Abe had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize for opening talks and easing tensions with North Korea.
Trump wanted a Nobel Prize for doing something literally every other American president had the opportunity to do, but saw the invites for what they were: an attempt by Pyongyang to get propaganda and the chance to get added legitimacy on the world stage.
And it’s not just that Trump took the meeting, it’s that it went nowhere. North Korea continues to build out its nuclear capabilities as Trump fawns over Kim Jong-un, leaving U.S. allies bewildered.
For that, Trump pressured a foreign nation to nominate him for a Nobel Prize.
