Day 749: Oops: Trump touts ‘abolition of civil rights’ by people of faith

Donald Trump spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday morning. Vowing to always stand with people of faith, Trump mostly gave a pro forma 20-minute speech read off a teleprompter after looking bored and uninterested for most of the breakfast.

He appeared to struggle reading much of the speech, but had an especially embarrassing gaffe when he said that people of faith led the charge in the “abolition of civil rights.”

It’s unclear what words Trump could have misread to get to that phrase or if the problem was in the text of the speech itself. Either way, Trump a) seemed to have no idea what he just said or b) why it’s problematic. So he just chose to continue reading the words that popped up in front of him. He said the words on the teleprompter much like a child learning to read: sounding words out and pronouncing them aloud but not listening to the meaning behind them and unable to understand the context of those words in conjunction with one another.
