Day 747: Trump threatens to build ‘human wall’ instead of concrete one on southern border

Sometimes Donald Trump says nonsensical things and people shrug it off simply as “Trump being Trump.” But words from the president matter and with the State of the Union set to happen Tuesday night, Trump began the day with yet another illogical missive.

He insisted that there are more people pouring through the southern border so without a concrete wall a “Human Wall” of military members would have to suffice.

Perhaps he’s seen the movie 300 a few too many times.

Maybe he’s referencing the an armed U.S. military lined shoulder-to-shoulder for 2,000 miles, though it’s unclear how this would be “building a wall.” (For reference, if there were a military member every three feet, there would need to be over 3.5 million troops for such a “wall.” There are barely 2 million active and reserve members of the military.)

Despite what the Trump administration claims, most illegal immigrants enter the U.S. at standard ports of entry and simply overstay visas. The idea that millions of people are crossing the border in the desert is pure falsity designed to induce fear. In fact, over the last decade, illegal immigration has steadily declined from Mexico while remaining steady from other nations.

So while Trump is desperate to tout any kind of wall — steel, concrete or, apparently, human — the threat is nonsensical.
