Day 735: Trump thinks grocery stores will give unpaid federal workers free food

Donald Trump — who is historically out-of-touch with the problems of the everyman — surrounded himself with people who are historically out-of-touch with the problems of the everyman.

That issue has been compounded as the Trump-engineered government shutdown approaches five weeks and hundreds of thousands of workers and their families are missing desperately needed paychecks.

Speaking about the comments Ross — who, oh by the way, is the Commerce Secretary — made that families should just get a loan to tide them over during the shutdown, Trump showed just how ignorant he is about the way the world works by comparing grocery stores to banks.

Trump seems to think that grocery stores — from big chains to local shops — will give customers free food, or at least on credit, if they aren’t currently collecting a paycheck. Despite having spent significant time and money in the real estate arena, Trump also doesn’t seem to even know the difference between a mortgagee (lender) and a mortgagor (borrower) in his nonsensical analogy.

Thursday isn’t the first time Trump has been confused about how grocery stores operate. He claimed in November that Americans needed an ID to buy cereal, when ranting about the possibility of voter fraud.

“If you buy a box of cereal — you have a voter ID,” Trump continued. “They try to shame everybody by calling them racist, or calling them something, anything they can think of, when you say you want voter ID. But voter ID is a very important thing.”

The shutdown is harming millions of Americans and Trump and his team have no idea just how dire the situation remains.
