Day 731: Halfway through presidency, Trump is still floundering
2 min readJan 21, 2019
Donald Trump’s presidency is half over, barring impeachment ending it sooner. Day-after-day he seems like he is learning less about the job, rather than becoming more adept at it.
The wins have been few and far between. In two years, the list of disasters appears endless, without even mentioning the decisions that led to the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller.
- He has engineered the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with no end in sight.
- He has forced trade wars that have caused market upheaval around the world.
- He gave millions and corporations a monumental tax break that infused no benefit back into the economy.
- He has split up the families of immigrants, keeping young children alone in prison camps.
- He has engaged in reckless foreign policy.
- He has cozied up to dictator after dictator, including claiming he fell in love with North Korean despot Kim Jong-un.
- He has cowardly refused to call out Russia for their role in trying to undermine the U.S. election, instead choosing to throw U.S. intelligence agencies under the bus.
- He has had dozens of awkward encounters with world leaders.
- He has overseen an ever-changing Cabinet and senior staff, leaving due to corruption or personality clashes.
- He has undercut the free press and free speech wherever possible.
- He has seen many top campaign staffers plead guilty to a litany of crimes.
- He has taken photo-ops for no reason than to change the latest bad headlines.
- He has lied nearly every day, and usually many, many times per day.
- He has played a historic amount of golf, watched an insane amount of television and used “executive time” as an excuse to do anything except work.
- He has tried to cut off aid to communities ravaged by natural disasters.
- He has watched as his poll numbers have tanked.
- He has tweeted to make himself feel better.
- He has uttered racist and sexist things and given cover to neo-Nazis and hate groups.
It’s half over. For better and for worse, it’s half over.
