Day 730: Art of the farce: Trump’s offer to end shutdown is laughable
Donald Trump’s options to end his self-inflicted government shutdown — besides punting on a border wall — are few and far between. So he called a Hail Mary by publicly announcing a “proposal” on Saturday in an effort to sway public opinion as much as Democrats.
Trump offered for 700,000 immigrant recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to stay for three years, in addition to 300,000 immigrants with temporary protected status. In exchange, he would get $5.7 billion for a wall.
In essence: three years for a million people American in everything but formal status that most Americans believe should be able to stay for a permanent wall at a ridiculous cost to U.S. taxpayers.
Trump claimed the deal was negotiated, but Democrats were never approached about the framework of a deal.
Democrats immediately saw the offer for what it was: a non-starter.
After Saturday’s announcement, the sides are no closer than they were earlier to ending the longest government shutdown in American history.
