Day 727: Giuliani: Trump campaign may have colluded with Russia, but Trump didn’t

Rudy Giuliani, once anointed as “America’s Mayor” by Oprah Winfrey, has since turned into one of Donald Trump’s hired mouths and his most visible personal attorney. Frequently on cable news, he doesn’t seem particularly good at his job.

He has lied, pivoted, tied himself in knots, misstated basic facts and undercut his own position on many issues since being retained in April 2018.

That trend continued Wednesday during an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo. A ranting and sweating Giuliani told Cuomo he couldn’t say there was no collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, only that Trump wasn’t involved in any such activity.

“I never said there was no collusion between the campaign, or people in the campaign,” Giuliani said.

He added, “I said the President of the United States. There is not a single bit of evidence the President of the United States committed the only crime you can commit here, conspiring with the Russians to hack the DNC.”

The captain of the ship claiming no responsibility for his high-ranking underlings’ malfeasance is a remarkably narrow-minded defense and reeks of desperation.

Giuliani’s most recent statements also underscore just how much Trump and his team’s argument have changed over the past two years amid various indictments and news reports. Trump said in January 2017 — in addition to numerous other occasions — that there were no contacts between anyone associated with his campaign and Russia. Suddenly, Giuliani is claiming that if collusion occurred, “it happened a long time ago.”

The story for years has been “no collusion, no collusion, no collusion.” But now the narrative has shifted to “no collusion involving Trump directly, but who knows about everyone else.”
