Day 725: ‘Billionaire’ Trump is awful proud to spend a little cash on fast food for football team
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers still aren’t getting paid as shutdown drags on.
The Clemson University football team visited the White House Monday on the heels of their national championship victory a week ago. Donald Trump, who claims to be a multi-billionaire, was boastful about paying for the Tigers’ food spread out of his own pocket.
Laughably placed on sterling silver and surrounded by illuminated candles atop ornate candelabra, Trump served (cold) food from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and pizza, saying “We went off and we ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza.”
The food, which couldn’t have cost more than a couple thousands dollars at most, wouldn’t be the only thing Trump would serve. Rather than reveling in Clemson’s accomplishment on its own, Trump felt the need to bring politics into the fray. At the event he said, “I will say the Republicans are really, really sticking together. It’s great to see because we need border security. We have to have it.”
And White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said in a statement to CNN:
“Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed — so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favorite fast foods.”
That’s an awful lot of back-patting over what is essentially petty cash for Trump considering hundreds of thousands of federal workers are going without needed paychecks as the government shutdown hits its fourth week. The shutdown is primarily due to Trump is trying to make American taxpayers pay billions of dollars for a border wall after promising for years that Mexico would pay for it.
UPDATE: He’s still very proud of paying for “hamberders” and more as of Tuesday morning.
