Day 684: Mueller continues closing in on Trump — recommends no jail time for Flynn based on immense cooperation
Robert Mueller asked a federal court to cut Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn loose due to substantial cooperation with the Russia investigation.
According to the special counsel, Flynn has sat for 19 interviews and his assistance provided the early stages that allowed Mueller’s team to properly investigate many issues.
Before being tapped to be Trump’s national security adviser, Flynn was an adviser to the Trump campaign starting in February 2016. He was so valuable that he was considered a candidate to be Trump’s running mate before Mike Pence got the gig. Flynn was later one of the vice-chairs of Trump’s transition team after the election. He was with Trump during the election, during the transition and after inauguration.
Needless to say, Flynn was a key cog in the Trump wheel, and has plenty of already-known ties to Russia. His substantial cooperation should worry Trump greatly.
While the sentencing memorandum revealed some information, like the fact that there are at least three ongoing investigations being pursued by the Justice Department, Mueller’s team was coy with many details. The facts surrounding two investigations were totally redacted.
Trump is implicated, too: Mueller’s memo notes that Flynn has cooperated with links or coordination between Trump’s team and the Russia government, despite Trump’s numerous previous proclamations that the probe is a witch hunt.
Mueller’s investigation has been pure mastery. He’s racked up indictments and pleas and convictions, including from many high profile individuals. Last week, Trump’s attorneys became concerned that they allowed Trump to commit perjury by underestimating the special counsel’s knowledge and strategy. Yesterday, Trump openly tampered with other potential witnesses.
Now it has been revealed that the level of Flynn’s cooperation is so high that the special counsel is recommending no jail time.
