Day 68: A Cover-Up Seems Afoot

Cancelled hearings, secret meetings and Republicans’ fear of information.

The House Intel Committee cancelled all meetings this week. Initially, the hearings were to be held in a public forum, as was the case when FBI Director James Comey and NSA Director Mike Rogers testified last Monday.

Republican Devin Nunes, who was part of the Trump transition team and heads the House committee, has previously met with a unnamed source on White House grounds, briefed Trump on specific findings before other members of the committee, and appears to be doing his own independent investigation to try and verify Donald Trump’s debunked claims that Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.

Even Republicans, such as Sen. John McCain, are perplexed by Nunes’ actions.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the committee, thinks the cancellation points to silencing former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, among others. (Yates was fired after failing to follow what she deemed unconstitutional orders from Trump.)

Former Department of Defense Chief of Staff is following a similar line of thinking.

The White House claims they had nothing to do with the axing of the hearings. Whether it was the White House or Nunes or both, it’s obvious that there are distinct reasons the hearing was cancelled at the last minute considering the witnesses were ready and the committee was ready. Those reasons are coming from Republicans; Democrats are calling for Nunes to resign and the hearings to proceed openly.

Nunes is claiming the investigation is proceeding as is, but something very strange is happening.

The Trump administration is refusing to provide details Tuesday to who signed House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes into offices on White House grounds, as the House investigation into Russia’s interference in the US elections is stalled, the victim of a partisan showdown.

Nunes was on Team Trump between the election and inauguration. Nunes has been on White House grounds multiple times this week, which is unusual. Witnesses were subpoenaed and want to testify. The hearings have been mysteriously cancelled, but the chair is claiming nothing has changed with the investigation. There’s an obvious disconnect between what is happening and what is being said.
