Day 675: Trump thanks himself for lowering oil prices to Obama-era level
Crude oil prices fluctuate for a number of reasons: recessions, inflation, increased drilling, embargoes, sanctions and various national and worldwide economic factors.
Still, Donald Trump thanked himself Sunday, in the third person of course, for single-handedly lowering crude oil prices worldwide.
In the television show The Office, a particularly quirky character, Dwight, brags about being able to raise and lower his own cholesterol through concentration alone. When another character asks why he would possibly want to raise his cholesterol, Dwight responds, “So I can lower it.”
Trump is Dwight.
He’s bragging about oil prices being lower. Except they’ve only risen since his inauguration. (Again, while a number of factors contribute to oil fluctuations, Trump wants it all on him.)
In fact, as the chart below shows, crude oil prices have been far, far lower. At the tail end of Barack Obama’s term, oil prices fell from over $110 per barrel to less than $30 per barrel.
The prices that Trump is now boasting about are still actually higher than when Obama left office.
So what is Trump so proud of? Essentially the same faux “power” as Dwight: raising something so that he can be proud about lowering it.
