Day 665: Trump is freaking out about Mueller

With word that special counsel Robert Mueller is working on his final report related to all things Election 2016, Russia and the Donald Trump campaign, it’s no surprise that Trump is really starting to panic.

Despite claiming he had nothing to hide, he refused to sit for an interview with Mueller. Despite claiming his total innocence, he has acted anything but. Despite trying to impugn the integrity of Mueller and his team, Trump’s blows have failed to land.

On top of that, he’s seen his former campaign manager, National Security Advisor and personal lawyer all flip as they face potentially lengthy prison sentences. After all, there are only so many bigger fish that they could rat out for reduced sentences.

Trump’s missives about Mueller have escalated since Mueller’s appointment as special counsel in the wake of Trump’s self-inflicted wound of firing James Comey from his post as FBI director. Initially hesitant to call Mueller out by name, Trump has pushed down every conceivable wall to try and discredit the probe, but only comes off looking like a cornered animal in the process.

Mueller was not only unanimously confirmed by the Senate to be the FBI director under George W. Bush, he was unanimously approved to serve an additional two years beyond the standard 10-year term under Barack Obama. (He also didn’t work for 8 years under Obama as Trump claimed. He served as FBI director for 4 years while Obama was president.)

A Politico report confirmed that Trump is wandering around the White House paranoid about Mueller.

“You can see it in Trump’s body language all week long. There’s something troubling him. It’s not just a couple staff screw-ups with Melania,” said a senior Republican official in touch with the White House. “It led me to believe the walls are closing in and they’ve been notified by counsel of some actions about to happen. Folks are preparing for the worst.”

Adding to the unease is a spate of anonymously sourced media reports suggesting Mueller’s self-imposed quiet period that started about two months before 2018 Election Day is about to transition into a Category 5 hurricane.

Trump privately seems resigned that his huffing and puffing of gibberish is no match for Mueller’s superstorm of facts.
