Day -65: Donate
Donald Trump is already filling out his Cabinet and his inner-circle with fairly terrifying people. There’s a lot of fear and trepidation just a week after Trump was elected to be the next Commander-in-Chief, with all the associated powers that come with the seat in the Oval Office.
Our advice: donate. Donate your time, your money, your effort or whatever you can to causes that you believe in. The man one heartbeat from the presidency, Mike Pence, believes in gay conversion retreats and signed into law as Governor of Indiana one of the most restrictive anti-abortion pieces of legislation since Roe v. Wade (later halted by a federal judge).
Donald Trump himself, despite calling the issue settled on 60 Minutes, has made promises to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision outlawing the banning of gay marriage. While he (and Congress) has no legal mechanism to do that directly — considering the Court found it a fundamental right under the 14th Amendment — he could easily nominate a severe conservative (surely confirmed by the Republican-held Senate) to take the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s vacant seat.
While a new conservative Justice wouldn’t be enough to flip the Court, should anyone else on the majority side of the 5–4 majority decision leave, the balance of power will be different. This means that the holding of Obergefell v. Hodges, while given some deference, could be struck down at a later time.
We have no idea the way policy will be shaped in the next four years, but make yourself heard. Don’t sit on your hands or pull the covers over your head.
The time for mourning is over.
Give money to organizations or candidates that can and will fight for the causes you believe in. Sign petitions, speak out on issues, educate yourself to what is happening around you.
Write your members of Congress or pick up the phone and advocate for your side on a bill or judicial appointment directly to the congressperson’s office (we promise, it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds). Call them right now and tell them Steve Bannon should be nowhere near the Oval Office, and the failure to publicly object to his presence will waive their ability to ever get your vote again.
Do what you can.
It’s all more important than ever.
