Day 641: Even by Trump standards, Monday’s lies were breathtaking in their panic, racism and stupidity
Desperation is oozing out of Donald Trump just two weeks before the midterm elections. That means lying in as brazen and reckless way possible, even by his own standards.
To start, he began Monday morning with some old fashioned fear-mongering.
There is no evidence at all — provided by the White House or otherwise — that gives credence to the claim that “criminals and unknown Middle Easterners” are trying to enter the U.S. But Trump knows the bogeyman is powerful tool, so he’s literally trying to scare Republicans to the polls by feigning a “National Emergy” that can only be solved by voting red.
He also claimed that there are riots over sanctuary cities in California.
There are and have been no such riots in California or anywhere else. This is an easily debunked lie, but one also meant to scare people to the polls by saying, ‘Vote Republican, or there could be riots in your area!’
Finally, Trump threw out a doozy about tax cuts. He claimed that middle class Americans would be getting a 10 percent tax break in the next two weeks. A bill of this sort would take many weeks to craft and vote on alone and would have substantial budget implications. With Congress out of session until after Election Day, it’s not even possible to get a bill on the floor before then, much less on Trump’s desk.
So, when called on his ridiculous promise, he issued a gobbledygook statement about “putting in a resolution” — whatever that means — that would accomplish the goal.
Perhaps Trump needs to watch the classic Schoolhouse Rock song, “I’m Just a Bill,” shown to elementary school students nationwide for over four decades to learn how a bill becomes a law.
Taken completely off guard, top Republicans in the House and Senate had no clue where Trump pulled his tax cut talking point from. Seeing the disaster of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that overwhelmingly lined the pockets of corporations and the uber-wealthy, most have been hesitant to even bring up the word “taxes” to their constituents.
Seeing the potential to lose the House, and even the Senate, Trump is growing even more panicked in his rhetoric and actions. Besides the racist scare tactics and outright lies, Trump has resorted to perhaps is most desperate move of all: campaigning for Ted Cruz, one of his most bitter 2016 enemies.
