Day 640: Despite Trump claiming job numbers are the best in history, they were better under Obama

Donald Trump likes to pretend he inherited a terrible economy and turned it around overnight all by himself. In actuality, thanks to Barack Obama, Trump inherited a robust economy that was continuing to grow. Literally doing nothing would have continued most trends on an upwards trajectory.

That hasn’t stopped Trump for patting himself on the back anyway, no matter how much truth-breaking it takes.

For example, Trump’s Sunday tweet hyperbolically touted job growth.

But job growth is at its lowest rate since 2012, all while wages remain largely stagnant.

2011: 2.091 million

2012: 2.142 million

2013: 2.302 million

2014: 2.998 million

2015: 2.713 million

2016: 2.240 million

2017 updated: 2.188 million

On a month-to-month accounting, Trump’s first 19 months is lagging behind Obama’s last 19 months by 10 percent.

So while Trump can claim that job numbers are the greatest in history of the Milky Way, it doesn’t magically make it true. In fact, he hasn’t even been able to outpace his predecessor.
