Day 622: Trump insults Ford; McConnell happy to help keep FBI probe, confirmation process a sham

What a one-two punch Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are turning out to be. One takes the heat with insults and boorish behavior while the other dismantles institutions with a more quiet efficiency.

During a campaign rally in Mississippi Tuesday night, Trump insulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has alleged and testified about her sexual assault at the hands Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s choice to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court. Continuing to prove there’s no bottom of his shame barrel, Trump mocked Ford’s memory of the night in question.

Except it was Trump whose memory failed.

With Trump forced to order additional FBI background screenings as it relates to Ford’s allegations — as well as that of additional women — McConnell, as the Senate majority leader, is committed to jamming Kavanaugh’s confirmation through by any means necessary. That means treating the FBI’s report as if it contained nuclear codes.

If it seems as though Republicans are concerned about the report being made public, it’s because that’s exactly what’s happening. There’s a single report that can be reviewed in a single room for a single hour at a time.

McConnell is engineering a situation where the public is shielded from reading or learning about a non-confidential background report that American tax dollars are paying for.

Kavanaugh’s hearing was largely disastrous for him. He came off belligerent, partisan, and perhaps worst of all, a liar. With no palatable options, Republicans are hoping to wrap the confirmation disaster by Saturday with as little additional information getting out as possible.

It’s a sham of epic proportions.
