Day 507: Trump’s war on allies continues
Donald Trump attended the G7 summit in Quebec, Canada and immediately turned it into a one versus six affair. He showed up late, left early, antagonized longtime allies and announced he wanted to add Russia to the group.
Despite the mess, upon leaving, it still seemed there would be a joint statement from the seven nations detailing certain initiatives and policy positions they are unified on.
Then, Trump did what he always does: lash out on Twitter as he’s fleeing the scene.
After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an announcement at the summit that Canada would issue retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods if the U.S. was still hellbent on taxing Canadians ones.
Trump cut-and-run and raised policy issues about G7 away from the summit. Trudeau logically responded at the summit about an issue vital to everyone.
Trump then responded (again, on Twitter, because he chose to leave the summit early).
Poof. The joint statement was gone and the U.S. trudges toward isolationism because Canada wants to issue tariffs in response to the U.S.’s new ones. Gone is any sense of formality and, apparently, respect between the U.S. and longtime allies and world powers.
