Day 506: Trump at G7: let’s add Russia, I’m leaving early
The Group of Seven, or G7, is a group of nations representing some of the largest and most advanced economies in the world who, in theory, share common values. The organization currently consists of the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and the U.K. The nations making up the group represent allies since at least World War II. Russia, who was a member for part of the organization's tenure, was expelled following their annexation of Crimea in early 2014.
Meeting for the 44th time, each nation’s leaders converged in Quebec, Canada beginning Friday.
Just before arriving, Donald Trump announced that he wanted to add Russia back to the group, in an announcement that did not go well either domestically or abroad, especially in light of the Robert Mueller probe.
Upon arrival, if there was any question regarding Trump’s ability to remain affable, that was thrown out the window when he announced that he would be leaving the summit early, before meetings about climate change and the health of the oceans.
Then, he ranted to the group about trade, claiming the the U.S. has been treated unfairly to American workers and the U.S. economy. (Meanwhile, on Twitter and in speeches, Trump has universally praised the economy that he largely inherited from Barack Obama.)
Trump’s remarks apparently created a one versus six feel to the summit among a group that has been ideologically close for decades.
