Day 486: Trump begs Mueller to end investigation
“STOP!” he pleads.
Things must not have been going well in the White House on Sunday morning. Whether he was watching TV, chatting with a friend, or eavesdropping on a conversation in the hall, Donald Trump took to Twitter and banged up a number of cringe-worthy panic-tweets in response in news about the Robert Mueller probe.
He begged Mueller to stop the investigation as it continues to bear fruit. He also managed to project blame onto third parties and deflect the rants to unrelated issues.
Among other things, the New York Times article that Trump references goes into detail about how private security contractor and former head of Blackwater, Erik Prince — who has previously been linked to a sketchy meeting in the Seychelles — set up a 2016 meeting where an emissary told Donald Trump Jr. that princes from Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. were eager to help Trump win the election. They apparently proposed social media manipulation, which could expose anyone involved to criminal exposure.
This is newsworthy because it potentially expands Mueller’s probe from Russia to two additional nations. But the overarching theme of his investigation remains the same: looking into 2016 election meddling by foreign actors and whether anyone — Democrat, Republican or independent — conspired with those actors.
As for the cost of the Mueller probe, Trump’s estimate of the cost to investigate election corruption is paltry and the equivalent cost to a handful of Trump trips to Mar-a-Lago, his private club in South Florida where he has spent 72 days since the inauguration. Between private flights and security costs, $20,000,000 spent on Trump’s vacations vanishes quickly, and the return on investment for a federal investigation related to election meddling is obviously greater than Trump playing 36 holes of a golf in a weekend with some pals.
Meanwhile, as he was tweeting away, Trump’s associates were publicly undercutting him, as they went on TV admitting that they were bracing for indictments from Mueller for their criminal actions.
