Day 478: WaPo: Trump — with no answers of his own — went on 30 minute tirade to Cabinet over immigration

Anger and ignorance is a bad combination. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson learned what it’s like to be opposite of duo when Donald Trump berate her for 30 minutes about illegal immigration, according to a Washington Post report.

Trump apparently wasted the time while meeting with his Cabinet and could offer no substantive solutions on his own.

Trump lashed out at his Cabinet, and Nielsen in particular, when told that the number of people arrested for illegally crossing the Mexico border topped 50,000 for the second consecutive month. The blowup lasted more than 30 minutes, according to a person with knowledge of what transpired, as Trump’s face reddened and he raised his voice, saying Nielsen needed to “close down” the border.

“Why don’t you have solutions? How is this still happening?” he said, adding later, “We need to shut it down. We’re closed.”

Trump’s management style has seemingly always been to tell people to do something, with no real idea how to do it. That’s only been intensified as he’s moved to government and policy — things for which he has little understanding and less desire to learn.

His frustration in this case likely comes from the fact that he very publicly celebrated a decrease in the number of undocumented migrants crossing the border last year.

Now, as the Post reported, those numbers have since returned to their previous levels.

Illegal crossings plunged in the early phase of Trump’s presidency, but have since returned to levels consistent with the last several years of the Obama administration. Arrests along the border with Mexico typically rise during springtime, when migrants seeking jobs on U.S. farms and ranches return for the summer growing season.
