Day 461: Trump’s day with France’s Macron was awkward as hell

Donald Trump’s meetings with world leaders are never normal. Trump always appears as though he’s acting in a play and forgot all his lines so he’s forced to wing it. But hosting his first official state dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron, the awkwardness ramped up to a level perhaps never before seen.

There was Trump publicly declared that Macron had dandruff on his shoulder and flicked it away, announcing, “We have to make him perfect.”

Trump then berated a reporter for asking a “stupid question” as to whether he was considering pardoning his lawyer, Michael Cohen, leaving Macron to make a confused and stunned face.

Later, at a joint press conference, Trump continued his history of bizarre handshakes. He executed the rarely-before-seen handshake position no. 1 to handshake position no. 2 to double hand slap to awkward bro hug-air kiss combination.

At another point, Trump grabbed Macron’s hand and yanked him back toward the White House, much like a four-year old would grab their friend’s hand to show them their newest teddy bear.

Not wanting to be outdone, Melania got in to the act by initially refusing to hold Trump’s hand during a photo-op.

Macron was set to speak to a joint session of Congress Wednesday — free from Trump — before heading back to France.
