Day 441: Donald Trump Seems Incredibly Jealous of Jeff Bezos

Donald Trump’s attacks on The Washington Post and Amazon continued Thursday morning, joining a litany of prior missives aimed at the two entities.

The connection between the two is Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post. Bezos — whose net worth fluctuates around $100 billion, depending on the stock market — has remained church-mouse quiet about the attacks.

Amazon and the Post have nothing in common besides Bezos. Additionally, Bezos remains very active in day-to-day activity at Amazon and is largely hands-off at the Post. He has makes no editorial decisions at the newspaper, instead focused on big picture business and technology ideas as the industry continues to shift to an ever-increasing digital space.

Accordingly, the Post has seen readership skyrocket.

The Washington Post had 86.5 million unique visitors in March 2017, an 18 percent increase year over year, according to comScore reporting. The Post also recorded more than 1 billion page views and readers spent an average of 17 minutes consuming content.

And Amazon has grown to be the third largest company in the world, behind only Apple and Alphabet. Meanwhile, Trump is critical of Amazon’s use of the United States Postal Services, despite federal contracts raking in billions of dollars for the government.

Trump appears jealous of Bezos’ success by trying to tether together entities which have little in common. A big problem for Trump is both companies are well-liked: the Post has seen steady readership increases while Amazon is one of the most admired companies in the world. The lone connection between the two, Bezos, is self-made and far wealthier and more popular than Trump has ever been.

Ultimately, Trump’s message is muddled at best, as he tries to tie “elites” to “fake news” in an attempt to play to his base. The message falls in even flatter among reports that Trump is doing this while huddling with his team of wealthy mega-donors, trying to raise money.
