Day 437: Trump Still Has No Clue How DACA Works
Sunday morning, Donald Trump wished the world a Happy Easter.
Then, he turned to what was really on his mind: illegal immigration, including begging Republicans in the Senate to use the “nuclear option” and do away with decades of precedence on the availability of the filibuster.
And Trump, despite tweeting about it so often, and it being in the news constantly, doesn’t appear to have any understanding of what DACA is or how it works.
To be eligible for DACA, recipients — among other things — had to have been in the United States since June 15, 2007, been under the age of 31 on June 15, 2012 and been physically present on June 15, 2012 when making their request for deferred action. So, unless current migrants have time-travel devices, it will be impossible for them to “take advantage of DACA.”
Trump has continued to tout illegal immigration falling as a result of his actions. However, now he wants to pass the buck in three ways: 1) despite Republicans controlling the House, the Senate and the presidency, he wants to blame Democrats for more undocumented migrants from trying to enter the U.S., 2) he wants to blame an Obama-era program that has literally nothing to do with more people trying to get into the country in 2018 and 3) he wants to blame Mexico for not doing enough to stop people from crossing the U.S. border.
Trump eloquently yells that the U.S. “NEED WALL!” but overplayed his hand when he declined a deal after Democrats offered him one in exchange for protection for DACA recipients. Now, he has a spending bill, which he hates, and doesn’t fund a wall, and he is forced to rant on Twitter about it an hour after wishing the world a Happy Easter.
