Day 43: Donald’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Thursday was rough for the commander-in-chief
Donald Trump’s Thursday — like much of his presidency — was like whack-a-mole: hit one scandal down, see two more pop up.
First, news broke that Attorney General Jeff Sessions joined an impressively long list of perjurers. When the White House tried to ameliorate Sessions’ answers, the Wall Street Journal quickly shut the explanation down.
The Trump administration says Attorney General Jeff Sessions was acting as a then-U.S. senator when he talked to Russia’s ambassador at an event during last year’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but Mr. Sessions paid for convention travel expenses out of his own political funds and he spoke about Donald Trump’s campaign at the event, according to a person at the event and campaign-finance records.
Next, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner was confirmed to have met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at Trump Tower in December.
Kislyak dodged cameras and slithered into Trump Tower via the backdoor.
Finally, news broke that Mike Pence used his personal email account — an AOL account, by the way — to conduct state business while acting as the Governor of Indiana. Also, that email account was hacked.
Politico noted the hypocrisy:
The report said Pence discussed sensitive matters and homeland security issues on the account, based on emails the Star obtained via a public records request, and an administration official confirmed that the account was hacked over the summer. The revelation comes after Pence regularly lambasted Clinton on the campaign trail for her use of a private email server as Secretary of State.
All of these stories have completely erased from memory and print Trump’s alleged pivot by maintaining somewhat composed and sane during his congressional address on Tuesday. In fact, they raise substantially more questions about Trump’s ability to surround himself with a competent staff and amplifies concerns about connections between the White House and Russia.
The misgivings and crimes committed by his staff are all flow back to one person.
