Day -42: Trump’s ‘Thank You Tour’ is an Affront to Unity
Rather than spending time on hugely (bigly?) important issues like transition of power, intelligence briefings, hiring of staff or a multitude of other key issues, narcissist Donald Trump is essentially holding more election rallies, this time under the guise of a “thank you tour.”
President Barack Obama traveled before his 2009 inauguration as well, but those were policy-based stops and not only to those areas that voted for him in swing states.
Trump’s current stops include Iowa, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Louisiana and Alabama.
Notice a trend?
With the exception of Alabama, the other states were considered toss-up states prior to election day. They all went red.
Trump is speaking directly to those voters telling them, ‘I got your support, and now you’ll get mine.’
The message to the rest of the country, especially the blue states, from the ever-vindictive Trump: ‘You’re in the back of the line, if you’re in line at all. These states, these people are more important than you.’
We previous wrote, regarding reasons to get rid of the Electoral College:
While the current compact members make up mostly blue states, certain bright red states may have reasons to get involved, too. Swing states traditionally get higher proportions of attention, aid, grant money, waivers, etc. So while a Republican president may align with the conservative values of a red, non-swing state better, that offers no tangible, financial benefit to the state, especially for a first term President that is interested in keeping swing state voters happy for a potential reelection campaign.
We’re seeing that already: bragging about a deal in Indiana because of their support for him and “thank you tour” stops in swing states that went red.
How are you feeling if you’re in Mississippi right now or Kansas or Wyoming or Alaska? After all, you voted for Trump, too. Yet, he’s not thanking you. He’s not negotiating with individual companies for your jobs. He’s not even acknowledging your existence. For all intents and purposes, he’s treating you like a blue state: with total apathy.
Trump is essentially already trying to run for reelection — or, at the very least, continuing the public relations tour to bolster his base — by reminding those in red swing states that he cares about them.
Expect to see it more moving forward, this time in policy: more aid, more tax benefits, more grant money, more attention to those swing states that helped elect Trump. His loyalties are now to a hand full of states in the Rust Belt, Florida and Louisiana.
He’ll do what’s necessary to make those states happy. But if you’re in Texas and seeing jobs lost to Mexico or elsewhere, you’re on your own. You don’t get thanked, you don’t get helped, you don’t get anything specific.
That’s one of the inherent flaws in the Electoral College system; it fails to consider the real-world effects of a first-term president.
Trump’s actions are an insult to the notion of united states because right now he’s proving that to him some are more important than others.
