Day 396: Trump had to be talked out of playing golf in wake of Parkland shooting, goes on crazy tweetstorm instead

Donald Trump spent yet another weekend at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach County, where the initiation fee alone is $200,000. As he is apt to do, he was in the mood to hobnob with his paying guests and squeeze in a loop or two around the golf course.

On the golf end, he had to be talked out of playing by his aides considering the somber and serious tone he was trying to convey after the school shooting in Parkland.

Trump was last seen publicly Friday night when he visited the Florida community reeling from a school shooting that left 17 dead and gave rise to a student-led push for more gun control. White House aides advised the president against golfing so soon after the tragedy, so Trump spent much of the holiday weekend watching cable television news and grousing to club members and advisers.

Less golf meant more TV time, so Trump sat back, watched and tweeted. And tweeted. And tweeted.

And waved goodbye to that somber and serious tone.

The Sunday missives followed blatant attempts at buck-passing and victim-blaming the day before. But cooped up from the golf course, Trump found new reasons to rant, via 10 tweets, about topics from NASCAR to Iran, from Oprah to Russia.

He tried to change his Russia story, despite previously proclaiming approximately 6,723,445 times that the Russia investigation was a hoax and there was no evidence that they attempted to influence the 2016 election.

He finally acknowledged Russia’s interference while simultaneously asking that the U.S. drop all investigations into said interference. The contradiction seemed to have gone totally over his head.

He — apparently unsuccessfully — tried to make himself feel better too.

He retweeted an account that got immediately suspended, likely for violating Twitter Terms of Service or being a bot.

And he admitted to watching a ton of TV, despite, just months ago, claiming, “I don’t get to watch much television. Primarily because of documents. I’m reading documents. A lot.”

There does not appear to be much document-reading at Mar-a-Lago these days (or ever).
