Day 384: Trump Wants to Waste Millions of Taxpayer Dollars on a Military Parade
Every day, Donald Trump seems to take steps that make him seem more like autocrats from around the world than past American presidents.
After calling those who wouldn’t stand and cheer for him during the State of the Union “treasonous” and “un-American,” Trump has now decided he’d like a grand military parade, like the Bastille Day spectacle he saw.
“The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France,” a military official told [The Washington Post]. “This is being worked at the highest levels of the military.”
The “highest levels of the military” are using time and resources to work on a military parade instead of figuring out how to send more troops home or defeat ISIS.
For the U.S. to do anything similar, they would have to transport tanks and other military hardware into Washington D.C. at a cost of many millions of dollars, that would come out of an already cash-strapped budget.
Tanks and launchers and Humvees on the street of D.C. would not be a welcome sight. There are ways to honor the military without an expensive parade of equipment.
While some parades are steeped in tradition — the Bastille Day parade has gone on for 137 years — most are a page out of a dictator’s playbook as a warning to both their own people and the world.
Like North Korea.
And Iran.
And Sudan.
And Russia.
And China.
